Northern White Rhino Population 2021 {June} Read & Know!

Northern White Rhino Population 2021 {June} Read & Know! >> Read this newsflash to know much about an extinction species. Find the important details here.

The northern white rhinoceros is a subspecies belongs to white rhinoceros. Earlier, they were found in abundance in Eastern and Central Africa. At the start of 2015, two northern rhinos were seen in zoos in the United States (San Diego Zoo Safari Park) and the Czech Republic (Dvůr Králové Zoo). After both died, northern white rhinos are no longer captivated in zoos. After the death of the last male northern white rhino Sudan on 19 March 2018, the Northern White Rhino Population 2021 now is only two. Both of these are females, called Najin and Fatu, and are living under tight protection at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy which is in Kenya.

Reasons Behind Endangerment of the Species

The causes for this species to move towards extinction are mostly hunting and poaching.

  • Hunting – The Northern White Rhinos succumbed to illegal hunting and were also victims of trophy hunting. Trophy hunting is hunting and retaining animal parts such as heads or horns as trophies, thereby controlling their population and maintaining balance in the ecosystem.
  • Poaching – Another reason for such drastic reduction in Northern White Rhino Population 2021 is the poaching for their horns. This is because traditional Chinese and Asian medicines claim to cure lack of keratin, and disorders like fevers or even cancer, respectively, with the processing of these horns.

Endeavour for Saving the Species

Researchers and conservationist organizations are now trying their best to save this species from being extinct.

  • In 2011, the Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine in the United Kingdom declared the disapproval of the use of rhinoceros horns.
  • Scientists have successfully created two new embryos in December 2020 to hopefully increase the Northern White Rhino Population 2021. This was done by artificial insemination of frozen sperm from dead males into the two surviving females by a process known as in-vitro fertilization or IVF.
  • To prevent further poaching of the northern white rhinos, they are secured by guarding system round the clock, in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

The northern white rhinos are inherently unaggressive that made it easier for hunters to attack them. Therefore, it is high time that the concerned authorities take stringent actions against hunting these endangered beings for seeing a rise in other rhinoceros’ species.

Conclusion for the Northern White Rhino Population 2021:

The Australian Rhino Project is working hard to build a genetically diverse population of rhinos in Australia and New Zealand. Likewise, over the last 50 years, WWF India aims to protect the Indian Rhino from hunting and ailing.

Using artificial fertilization in laboratories and by 3protecting the remaining rhinos under rigid safety, it is evident that both science and law are sparing no effort in protecting these rhinos and preventing the world’s second-largest land animals (after elephants) from vanishing. The numbers of the Northern White Rhino Population 2021 may expectantly grow in the near future. For complete details on the population of this species, click here.
