Meena Alexander was born on 17th February 1951. She was born in India, Allahabad. She died on 21st November 2018 in New York, U.S. She was an Indian teacher and poet whose works replicate her multi-ethnic life in India, the United States, and Sudan.

Meena Alexander was educated in a Bachelor’s degree in 1969 at the University of Khartoum, Sudan. She completed her Ph.D. in 1973 at the University of Nottingham in England. Meena Alexander detained many teaching positions in India and other countries.  She moved with David Lelyveld, her husband, to New York City. In 2009, she imitated on her move to the U.S. 

In the 1970s, she stated there was an issue of discrimination that shocked her out of her mind. She mentioned that she never thought of herself as an individual of colour. She has lived in the U.S. since 1979 and continues to impart her knowledge while writing poetry.

Her husband, David Lelyveld, revealed Meena Alexander’s death. He mentioned that the death cause of Meena Alexander was endometrial serous cancer. She died at the age of 67. Meena Alexander’s Honors and Awards

The poet’s memoir was chosen by Publishers Weekly, Fault Lines. It was one of the Best Books in 1993. Meena’s poetry pool, Illiterate Heart, won the 2002 PEN Open Book Award. In 2002, the poet was awarded the International Award of Imbongi Yesizwe Poetry.

In 2009, she was the recipient of the Distinguished Achievement Award. She received an award from the South Asian Literary Association and was honoured for her contributions to American literature. In 2016, the poet received the Word Masala Foundation’s award a Word Masala award.

She was not only a poet-writer; she also wrote a one-act play. The play includes In the Middle Earth, which was written in 1977. It was a volume of criticism, Women in Romanticism in 1989, a semi-autobiographical novel set in Hyderabad state, India, in Nampally Road in 1991, and a memoir, Fault Lines in 1993.
