To save Chavez from Wanda (Scarlet Witch), Dr Strange was struck in a parallel universe with another variant in that universe. That Dr Strange was a darkhold magician. So to protect Chavez in another Universe, Doctor Strange has to use the darkhold to enter the body of another variant.
As a result of reading a darkhold, he has to pay some price that results in getting the third eye of dark magic. This scene is shot in the post-credits of the movie. After having a third eye, Dr Strange can operate in the dark and real world.
