According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, individual who has taken the total doses in a two-dose series can gather safely unmasked and inside with those non-vulnerable people, who are not yet vaccinated.

On 8th March 2021, while announcing CDC Mask Update 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director, Mr. Rochelle Walensky, MD, MPH, said people in the United States were in a hurry to get vaccinated to do the things they love. The director further said there were some activities that fully vaccinated people could start.

Finally, Mr. Walensky said, this recommendation represented a much-awaited, crucial first step, but it was not their final guideline. As more vaccinations would be done, as more severe effects of SARS-CoV-2 would decline, they would update this guideline further.

As per the CDC updated guideline-‘CDC Mask Update 2021‘, people who are considered as fully immunized for SARS-CoV-2 at least have two weeks gap after taking the second dose of 2 dose series (Moderna or Pfizer-Biotech) or single-dose vaccine (Janssen or Johnson & Johnson) can do-

  • They can visit with other fully immunized people indoors without wearing a mask and social distancing.
  • They can meet people who are not yet vaccinated from single households, who have a lower chance of getting Covid-19 indoors, without social distancing, and wearing masks.
  • They should avoid testing and quarantine following exposer to people if they stay asymptotic. 

What are the restrictions mentioned in CDC Mask Update 2021?

In this updated recommendation, CDC has issued some restrictions that are mandatory to maintain. As per the guidance-

  • People who are fully immunized are required to wear masks properly and maintaining social distancing in the outdoor public gathering and around the people who have a greater risk of this severe disease.
  • Individuals should cover their faces with proper medical masks and maintain social distance if they visit non-immunized people from more than one household.
  • People needed to avoid medium to large public gatherings for safety purposes.
  • People should try to avoid travel as much as possible.
  • If someone experiences Covid-19 symptoms, they are recommended for testing.
  • Employers ought to follow the guidance.
